Sæterstad Farm is the kind of place where “nobody would imagine anyone could live”. At 400 metres above sea level, in stunning natural surroundings and with Røssvatnet, Norway’s second largest lake as its nearest neighbour, Sæterstad is one of inner Helgeland’s gems, right up by the Swedish border.
Queen of the Mountains
Sæterstad is a farm where nature and culture meet, leaving an indelible impression on all your senses. It is also the farm that launched Norway’s very first land-based facility for farming freshwater Arctic char, or the “Queen of the Mountains” as it is also known. The broodstock are sourced from local mountain lakes, and production takes place in the farm’s own “fish barn”. Sæterstad won Norway’s highest award for its own delicious fermented fish in 2009, and the farm also produces several award-winning varieties of organic goats’ cheese from its own goats’ milk.
Hunting, fishing, hiking
Sæterstad Farm lies at the foot of Mount Krutfjellet in the municipality of Hattfjelldal in the county of Nordland, an area which has been inhabited by Sami, Swedes and Norwegians for many hundreds of years. Here you can stay in comfortable accommodation, eat well, relax in the sauna or hot tub, and – not least – explore the surrounding countryside, with hunting, fishing and mountain hiking on well-marked trails. The farm also offers guided hikes and boating trips, and hires out boats and canoes.
Farm restaurant and farm shop
You are also welcome to take a tour of the goat dairy, the fish barn, see the farm’s very own micro-hydropower plant, visit the salt cave and then round off the day with a delicious home-cooked meal at the farm restaurant. Perhaps you’ll also be tempted by some of the award-winning fish, cheese or meat from the farm shop? The farm is open to visitors every day during the summer, while the rest of the year it is necessary to book.
