Daylight is short and roads are narrow, winding and often icy. If you regularly drive in alpine or Nordic winter conditions, this should pose no problem for you. You arrive rested, ready to look for the Northern Lights, and parking is not an issue. Best of all, it can be organised easily. There is a good network of buses and express boats fanning out of Troms\u00f8; to the fjords and alps of Lyngenfjord, to the fairytale island of Senja, to the friendly city of Harstad. Why don\u2019t more tourists take the bus or boat? Probably because they can\u2019t find out when it leaves. This article aims at helping you with that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where do we travel from Troms\u00f8?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This article is <strong>Troms\u00f8<\/strong>-based. Many travellers start their voyage in Troms\u00f8, given the many direct flights from major hubs in Europe. A winter holiday in Troms\u00f8 gets so much better if you can include a few relaxing nights in a hut or resort in <strong>Senja<\/strong>, in <strong>Sommar\u00f8y<\/strong> or somewhere in the <strong>Lyngenfjord<\/strong> area. <strong>Harstad<\/strong> is Troms\u00f8\u2019s friendly and handsome little brother, with good food and plenty to see. The <strong>Lofoten<\/strong> Islands are further away \u2013 on the map and in mood. <strong>Narvik<\/strong> is drama \u2013 in war and in wilderness. Or maybe the <strong>North Cape, Alta and Hammerfest<\/strong> are your goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">NEARBY ESCAPES:<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>The unhurried traveller will find calm, beauty and relaxation in snug cabins and peaceful holiday villages not far from Troms\u00f8.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sommar\u00f8y is a close escape from Troms\u00f8<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The nearest \u201cresort\u201d-like location to Troms\u00f8 is the fishing village of <strong>Sommar\u00f8y<\/strong>. There is a <a href=\"https:\/\/svipper.no\/?sprak=3\">bus <\/a>or two going there every day. If you are staying in one of the holiday villages, resorts or small hotels on this fairytale island, you can be taken to the reception door from Troms\u00f8\u2019s airport (and city centre) hassle-free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If their timetable doesn\u2019t suit you, you can use the regular public transport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A: There is an <a href=\"https:\/\/svipper.no\/?sprak=3\">express boat<\/a> running 2-4 times a day to <strong>Finnsnes<\/strong> (and on to Harstad).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>B: From Finnsnes, there are buses going to localities around the island of Senja. However, these do not run very often. Have your hotel\/accommodation help you find out. Some of them also pick up in Finnsnes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>C: Alternatively, there is also an express boat to the port of <a href=\"https:\/\/svipper.no\/?sprak=3\"><strong>Lysnes<\/strong> <\/a>on the island\u2019s northeastern side. From here, buses go to communities on the northern side of the Island, notably to <strong>Botnhamn<\/strong> and <strong>Lysnes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>D: Another option is to take the express boat to Finnsnes and hire a car there. This will save you many kilometres of driving and limit the driving to little-trafficked side roads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In short: Senja is perfectly reachable by public transport, but you need to coordinate boat and bus times carefully \u2013 or let your accommodation arrange the transfer. It departs 2 to 4 times a day and takes about 3 hours, stopping in Finnsnes and a couple of other ports on the way. There is a simple cafeteria onboard, and most of the sailing goes through sheltered waters. The same distance by car would take you around 4.5-5 hours \u2013 doing a long detour inland. Book ahead \u2013 and have a guaranteed seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Go beyond the Lyngen Alps by bus or boat<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The very scenic <strong>Lyngenfjord<\/strong> area, sporting great Northern Lights chances, is the place for relaxed stays in comfortable accommodation. The various villages and settlements are connected with Troms\u00f8 in different ways; bus or express boat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-whales-in-skjervoy\">The whales in Skjerv\u00f8y:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In the darkest winter months, the waters off Skjerv\u00f8y are full of whales. If you want to go to Skjerv\u00f8y and spend the night there, there are several options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A: In the whale season, <strong>Arctic Route<\/strong> operates a service directly from Troms\u00f8 to Skjerv\u00f8y, and you can get there and back in the same day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>B: The legendary <strong>Hurtigruten<\/strong> sails every evening from Troms\u00f8, arriving in Skjerv\u00f8y late at night. You can dine on board and maybe see the Northern Lights from the ship. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hurtigruten.com\/en\/port-to-port\">Hurtigruten <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.havilavoyages.com\/port-to-port\">Havila <\/a>share the operation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>C: There is an <a href=\"https:\/\/svipper.no\/?sprak=3\"><strong>expressboat<\/strong> <\/a>most days of the week, stopping at various points. It is quicker and cheaper than the Hurtigruten \u2013 and a good and comfortable alternative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>D: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/svipper.no\/?sprak=3\">Bus 150\/155<\/a><\/strong> from Troms\u00f8 to Skjerv\u00f8y takes around 4 hours, with one bus change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bus-150-takes-you-through-the-lyngen-alps\">Bus 150 takes you through the Lyngen Alps:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The bus line <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/svipper.no\/?sprak=3\">Troms\u00f8-Alta<\/a><\/strong> involves two very scenic fjord crossings and passes through the Lyngen Alps on the way. If you have booked accommodation in Svensby, Lyngseidet, Olderdalen, Sp\u00e5kenes, S\u00f8rkjosen and Storslett, this is your bus. Onwards connections by bus take you to Nord-Lenangen (150) and Skjerv\u00f8y (465). Buses go at least once a day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bus-160-takes-you-deep-inland-along-majestic-fjords\">Bus 160 takes you deep inland along majestic fjords:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>No less scenic is the <a href=\"https:\/\/svipper.no\/?sprak=3\">bus ride<\/a> taking you from Troms\u00f8 to Nordkjosbotn and then on to Oteren, Skibotn, Manndalen, Birtavarre, Olderdalen, Sp\u00e5kenes and S\u00f8rkj\u00f8sen. Among others. The drive there by car is long on winter roads in the dark. The public transport options are all scenic, safe and lovely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are five realistic ways to reach Lofoten without driving all the way yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A: Sail in style along the coast:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Hurtigruten<\/strong>, these days a shared operation between the companies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hurtigruten.com\/en\/port-to-port\"><em>Hurtigruten<\/em> <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.havilavoyages.com\/port-to-port\"><em>Havila<\/em> <em>Kystruten<\/em><\/a>, sails every day past midnight from Troms\u00f8 to Svolv\u00e6r\/Lofoten, taking around 17 hours. Get a cabin, have a buffet lunch and walk around the blue city of Sortland when in port. However, you should definitely prebook this voyage as part of your holiday planning-<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>B: The Catamaran\/Bus combo is fast and comfy:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A very time-efficient, beautiful and comfortable way of reaching Svolv\u00e6r\/Lofoten is to take the express boat in the morning (usually at 7) from Troms\u00f8 to Harstad, then go on a local bus from Harstad to the bridge of Tjeldsundbrua. From here, there is an express bus coming from Narvik, going to Svolv\u00e6r, and then on to the whole archipelago, with \u00c5 as its ending point. This combo works Monday to Friday. It can be done every day of the week and takes 8 to 10 hours. Consider the 10-hour tour, as it allows you to taste the \u201cBjerkviking\u201d \u2013 a legendary burger at Bjerkvik during a welcome break. Again, <a href=\"https:\/\/svipper.no\/?sprak=3\">Svipper <\/a>has the exact hours. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>D: Fly to Lofoten<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A good time saver is the plane. Lofoten has two airports, Leknes (LKN) and Svolv\u00e6r (SVJ), and you book directly with the airline <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wideroe.no\/en\">Wider\u00f8e<\/a>, flying smaller, comfortable propeller machines. It is a very good idea to plan well ahead, as there is a demand for the seats. Why not go overland or by sea one way, and do it the easy way the other?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>E: Rent a car in Lofoten<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to avoid the long drive from Troms\u00f8 to Lofoten on slippery roads in winter darkness, but still want to have the flexibility of a rental car when exploring the islands \u2013 rent the car for a day or three in Lofoten. This saves you a lot of kilometres on winter roads. But if done by public transport, it\u2019s a completely safe adventure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/nordnorge.com\/en\/artikkel\/alta-a-northern-lights-city-with-good-winter-weather\/\">Alta<\/a>:<\/strong> Alta, known for its UNESCO-listed <a href=\"https:\/\/nordnorge.com\/en\/artikkel\/rock-carvings-in-alta-7000-year-old-rock\/\">rock carvings <\/a>and excellent winter activities, &nbsp;is 380 km (or 290 km + two ferry crossings) east of Troms\u00f8.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/nordnorge.com\/en\/artikkel\/see-the-northern-lights-in-the-worlds-northernmost-city-hammerfest\/\">Hammerfest<\/a>:<\/strong> The world\u2019s northernmost city is atmospheric and scenic, a 140 km away from Alta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Honningsv\u00e5g and the <a href=\"https:\/\/nordnorge.com\/en\/artikkel\/north-cape-northern-lights\/\">North Cape:<\/a><\/strong> A bus following the snowplough goes to the very end of Europe. Usually, if you have a bus change, the connecting bus waits for the incoming bus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cancellations and delays are usually caused by bad weather. Then it is usually not a good idea to be driving in a rental car either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Allow plenty of time between overland transport in Northern Norway and your arrival in Troms\u00f8 when finishing your trip and catching a flight home.
