Succulent king crab or black filter coffee on the go: There is no limit to the sensory impressions if you travel by bus around the furthest northeast of Norway in the middle of winter. Kirkenes is probably your starting point.<\/em> \n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The land between <strong>Finland<\/strong>, <strong>Russia<\/strong> and the <strong>Barents Sea<\/strong>, the far northeast of the country, is a different Norway altogether; high horizons, vast emptiness with small and tightly clustered settlements interspersed . In winter, the strong colours of the village houses pop against the white snow. At night, the Northern Lights have an endless sky to dance on. &nbsp;You\u2019re far away from it all and see things few others have experienced. However, if you have never driven on an icy road, never shovelled out a car from the snow in the morning or never scraped the ice off the windscreen, driving up here might not be your cup of tea \u2013 even if it\u2019s a thermos cup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The alternative is obvious \u2013 there is a network of <strong>buses<\/strong> serving all the settlements in a coherent and reliable system, flexible when the weather acts up. Propeller planes and the classical coastal voyage Hurtigruten invite you to choose between scenic shortcuts and hours of old-school travel \u2013 both full of character. Here we tell you how.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You most likely arrive in <strong>Kirkenes<\/strong> by plane, given the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avinor.no\/en\/airport\/kirkenes\/\">direct connections <\/a>to <strong>Oslo<\/strong> and <strong>Helsinki<\/strong>. Some travellers also choose to arrive with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hurtigruten.com\/en\/port-to-port\">Hurtigruten<\/a>\/<a href=\"https:\/\/www.havilavoyages.com\/\">Havila<\/a>, and then spend some days in the area. Kirkenes is known for its snow hotel, and has many activities like snowmobiling, dogsledding and king crab fishing, and you can easily fill days with activities and good food. But beyond, there is plenty to discover \u2013 either just around Kirkenes, around the <strong>Varangerfjord<\/strong> and further afield. class=\"wp-block-heading\">Around Kirkenes<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Home to nearly 8000 people, <a href=\"https:\/\/visitkirkenes.info\/en\/home\/\">Kirkenes <\/a>is the liveliest location in the far east. It also has a host of activities on offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To <strong>Neiden<\/strong>: For visits to the \u00c4\u2019vv <a href=\"https:\/\/dvmv.no\/en\/vv-skoltesamisk-muse\/avv-skoltesami-museum\/\">Skolt Sami museum<\/a>, there are 4 connections a day, Monday to Friday. The Museum is closed in the weekend and on Mondays. If you dress warmly, you can walk down to the waterfall and on to the Skolt village with the tiny 16<sup>th<\/sup> century chapel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Into the <strong>Pasvikdalen<\/strong> Valley: the 272 runs to <strong>Pasvik<\/strong> school, stopping at <strong>Svanvik<\/strong>, everything done in an hour. Connections are Monday to Friday, 2-3 times a day. If you have booked accommodation further up (south) in the valley, there is a bus in the afternoon taking you there, and an early morning bus going to Pasvik school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Around the Varangerfjord<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>The far north is a region of vast distances. However, the <strong>Varangerfjord<\/strong> has many historical, picturesque communities and towns along its shores that are conveniently close to each other. You can easily spend a week in winter, fill it with museums and cultural things, good food \u2013 from king crab to Thai food &nbsp;-, and relaxation in some of the resort-like places to stay. Buses are also rather frequent around the fjord. It runs every day except Saturday, 4 times a day on workdays and twice a day on Sunday. It takes 2 hours to Varangerbotn, 3+ to Vads\u00f8 and 4.5 hours to Vard\u00f8.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The detour to Bug\u00f8ynes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>FLEX 832<\/strong> is a minibus running to <strong>Bug\u00f8ynes<\/strong> if prebooked (see FLEX further down). It runs Monday, Wednesday and Friday, twice a day. This means you either visit this very picturesque place as a daytrip between Kirkenes and Vads\u00f8 or stay two or three nights there. B\u00e5tsfjord and Nordkyn<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>A bit further away from <strong>Kirkenes<\/strong>, a bit more time involved. But then you reach places that see very far off the beaten track. Which to some of us is why we travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/destinationsapmi.com\/destination\/tana-en\/\">Tana<\/a><\/strong>: The little centre, complete with a hotel and places to eat beyond the striking bridge crossing Norway\u2019s second longest river <strong>Tana\/Deatnu\/Tenojoki<\/strong>. There are 4 connections a day from Varangerbotn (2 on Sundays, none on Saturday, line <strong>274<\/strong>) and connections to Vads\u00f8 (<strong>275<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Berlev\u00e5g and B\u00e5tsfjord<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hurtigruten.com\/en\">Hurtigruten<\/a>\/<a href=\"https:\/\/www.havilavoyages.com\/\">Havila <\/a>sails from Kirkenes around noon and reaches <strong>Berlev\u00e5g<\/strong> around midnight. It also leaves in the evening from <strong>Berlev\u00e5g <\/strong>and midnight from<strong> B\u00e5tsfjord<\/strong>, and sails overnight to <strong>Kirkenes<\/strong>, arriving in the morning. &nbsp;There are also flights from Kirkenes to both places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Public bus involves prebooking <strong>FLEX minibuses<\/strong> \u2013 check the <strong>830<\/strong> (B\u00e5tsfjord) and <strong>831<\/strong> (Berlev\u00e5g). If organised ahead, you can make a nice round trip involving the Hurtigruten\/Havila and a FLEX minibus. peninsula:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Definitely off the beaten track, the peninsula of <a href=\"https:\/\/visitnordkyn.com\/\">Nordkyn <\/a>(often spelled Nordkinn) is for the advanced traveller.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hurtigruten.com\/en\">Hurtigruten<\/a>\/<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.havilavoyages.com\/\"><strong>Havila<\/strong> <\/a>sails from Kirkenes daily and calls at Mehamn and Kj\u00f8llefjord in the middle of the night. The return journey can be more convenient, sailing from Kj\u00f8llefjord and Mehamn in the evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Overland, there is a connection every day except Saturday, the 150 from Kirkenes, the 130 from Varangerbotn. You don&#039;t get further east in Norway \u00a9 Are Olaussen<\/figcaption><\/div>\t<\/div>\n\t\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Travelling to the West of Finnmark and Troms\u00f8<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>From <strong>Kirkenes<\/strong>, <strong>Vard\u00f8<\/strong> and Vads\u00f8, you can travel to Varangerbotn terminal with the <strong>150<\/strong> and get onboard the <strong>120<\/strong> to <strong>Karasjok<\/strong> and <strong>Alta<\/strong> &nbsp;and the <strong>130<\/strong> to Lakselv and Hammerfest (about 9 hours)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/nordnorge.com\/en\/destinasjon\/hammerfest\/\">Hammerfest<\/a><\/strong>: Bus <strong>130<\/strong> takes you across the Ifjordfjellet mountain passage on to Lakselv and Olderfjord and on to Hammerfest every day except Saturday. If you change in Olderfjord, you can take the <strong>110<\/strong> to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/nordnorge.com\/en\/region\/nordkapp\/\">Honningsv\u00e5g<\/a><\/strong>. You will not be able to go to the <a href=\"https:\/\/nordnorge.com\/en\/aktiviteter\/follow-the-snowplow-towards-the-north-cape\/\">North Cape<\/a> the same day, though.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/nordnorge.com\/en\/region\/alta\/\">Alta<\/a>:<\/strong> Bus <strong>120<\/strong> takes you across the Finnmarkvidda plain through Karasjok in 6.5 hours. There is one bus a day except Saturday. From Alta, there is a daily bus to <strong>Troms\u00f8<\/strong>, taking 7 hours, meaning you spend the night in Alta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>With the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hurtigruten.com\/en\">Hurtigruten<\/a>\/<a href=\"https:\/\/www.havilavoyages.com\/\">Havila<\/a>: <\/strong>The Coastal Route sails every day from Kirkenes around noon, then gets to <strong>Honningsv\u00e5g<\/strong> (close to the North Cape) in the early morning and to <strong>Hammerfest<\/strong> around noon the next day \u2013 before reaching <strong>Troms\u00f8<\/strong> at midnight. Depending on the day, it is operated by Havila or Hurtigruten ASA. Russia:<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Finland, a Nordic neighbour and an EU\/EEA and Schengen country, has more or less the same entry formalities as Norway. If your passport is from outside the EU\/EEA\/Schengen area, double check. From <strong>Kirkenes<\/strong> and <strong>Varangerbotn<\/strong>, there is no direct bus connection to <a href=\"https:\/\/visitinari.fi\/\"><strong>Inari<\/strong> <\/a>and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitrovaniemi.fi\/\">Rovaniemi<\/a><\/strong>, two major hubs in the north of Finland. Instead, you need to stay the night in either <strong>Karasjok<\/strong> (Norway) or <strong>Utsjoki<\/strong> (Finland).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most used connection is the daily bus from <strong>Karasjok<\/strong>. You can take the <strong>150\/120<\/strong> combination to Karasjok in the morning, <a href=\"https:\/\/destinationsapmi.com\/destination\/karasjok-en\/\">look at the sights <\/a>(there are several) in Karasjok, stay the night and then take the early morning bus from Karasjok to Inari and Rovaniemi in Finland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also get off the same bus in <strong>Roavvegieddi<\/strong> \u2013 just opposite the Finnish village of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lapland.fi\/visit\/plan-your-stay\/utsjoki-tundra-arctic-ocean-tour\/\">Utsjoki<\/a><\/strong> and cross the border walking. However, by then the morning bus to Inari and Rovaniemi has left. Utsjoki has a museum, activities and places to stay, and is a Finnish alternative to <strong>Karasjok<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-grid
