The voyage to the furthest north also has some fascinating milestones. \n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">Have you ever opened an atlas for no reason at all? Tried to pronounce the strange names and followed the coastlines of the continents with your finger. Unconsciously, your eyes are drawn upwards to the north. Away from the big cities and familiar names. Maybe you\u2019ve thought; wonder what it looks like up there. To some of us, reaching high latitudes is important in itself. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">Northern Norway reaches far into the north. Yet it is a land where people work, travel around and enjoy life. This means you can travel here safely and comfortably, as opposed to most other locations on the same latitude. id=\"h-the-north-cape-used-to-be-the-end-of-the-world\">The North Cape used to be the end of the world<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At 71\u00b0\u200910\u2019\u200921\u201d&nbsp;N degrees north, Nordkapp or the <strong>North Cape is<\/strong> at the end of the road. You simply cannot drive any further north on the Eurasian road network. The North American road network stops at 70\u00b0&nbsp;12\u2032&nbsp;20\u2033&nbsp;N. To get further north, you must sail or fly. However, you can hike to the neighbouring cape, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/nordnorge.com\/en\/artikkel\/knivskjelodden-is-the-northernmost-north-in-norway\/\" data-type=\"artikler\" data-id=\"3250\">Knivskjelodden<\/a><\/strong>, 71\u00b0\u200911\u2019\u200908\u201d, extending 1453 metres further north. The North Cape is found on the island of Mager\u00f8ya. The European mainland\u2019s northernmost point is Cape <strong>Kinnarodden<\/strong> at 71\u00b008\u203202\u2019N on the Nordkyn peninsula, clearly visible from the North Cape on a clear day. The hike here is long, and is reserved for the outdoorsy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-svalbard-islands-are-the-world-s-northernmost-holiday-destination\">The Svalbard islands are the world\u2019s northernmost holiday destination<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These days, however, you can reach even further north. The remote archipelago of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/nordnorge.com\/en\/destinasjon\/svalbard\/\" data-type=\"destination\" data-id=\"1617\">Svalbard<\/a><\/strong>, historically known as <strong>Spitsbergen<\/strong>, has an airport and a population of some 3000 people, mostly located in <strong>Longyearbyen<\/strong> &nbsp;78\u00b0 12&#8242; 60.00&#8243;. Up here, one can stay in comfortable hotels, eat well and enjoy cultural events. Any venturing further north, though, requires staging a carefully planned expedition, best left to the outdoor experts. One exception is the research station at <strong>Ny-\u00c5lesund<\/strong> at 78\u00b0 54&#8242; 59.99&#8243; degrees north. In a short summer season, expedition cruises call here. Roughly. North of this, the midnight sun shines in summer, and around midwinter, the sun is below the horizon at mid-day. In Norway, this location is most easily reached at the <strong>Saltfjellet<\/strong> mountain crossing, just north of the Arctic Circle city of <strong>Mo i Rana<\/strong>. The explanation centre at 650 metre altitude is a compulsory stop. However, if you take the ferry from <strong>Kilboghamn to Jektvik<\/strong> along the <a href=\"https:\/\/nordnorge.com\/en\/artikkel\/the-norwegian-scenic-route-in-helgeland-is-a-journey-across-the-islands-in-the-west-and-along-ice-capped-mountains-to-the-east\/\" data-type=\"artikler\" data-id=\"6324\">coastal <\/a>road, the metal globe on the island of Vikingen is a clear marker. If you cross the Arctic circle on the boat between the islands of Tr\u00e6na and Selv\u00e6r, there is no marking. Or maybe not<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The 10&nbsp;000 inhabitants of <strong>Hammerfest, <\/strong>70\u00b0 39&#8242; 48.10&#8243; N<strong>, <\/strong>proudly call their city the world\u2019s northernmost. Founded by royal charter in <a href=\"https:\/\/nordnorge.com\/en\/artikkel\/hammerfest-is-the-worlds-northernmost-city-maybe\/\" data-type=\"artikler\" data-id=\"668\">1789<\/a>, the city has a long and illustrious history. However, how do you define a city these days when kings no longer issue charters? The 2600 inhabitants of <strong>Honningsv\u00e5g<\/strong>, 70\u00b0 58&#8242; 55.52&#8243; N close to the North Cape, have unilaterally declared themselves a city. The intention was not to spite the Hammerfestonians, that was just a bonus. Settlements in Siberia, Greenland and Alaska, all smaller than Hammerfest, are also further north, as is <strong>Longyearbyen<\/strong> on 78\u00b0 12&#8242; 60.00&#8243; N. The remote island of <strong>Kvit\u00f8ya<\/strong>, part of the territory of Svalbard, is even further east, the eastern extremety <strong>Kr\u00e6merpynten<\/strong> is at 33\u00b0&nbsp;30\u2032&nbsp;58.74\u2033&nbsp;E. St. George&#8217;s chapel at <strong>Neiden<\/strong> 69\u00b041&#8217;59.99&#8243; from 1565, but that is technically later than the middle ages.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pilgrimage route:<\/strong> The H\u00e5logalandsleia from <strong>Trondenes <\/strong>leads the faithful and the philosophically disposed to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nidarosdomen.no\/en\" target=\"_blank\">Saint Olavs grave <\/a>in Trondheim<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cathedral:<\/strong> V\u00e5r Frue (Our Lady) Catholic Cathedral in <a href=\"https:\/\/nordnorge.com\/en\/artikkel\/walk-the-historic-centre-of-tromso\/\"><strong>Troms\u00f8 <\/strong><\/a>69\u00b065&#8217;17N is found just a few hundred metres north of the Lutheran <strong>Troms\u00f8 Cathedral<\/strong>, which thus is the world\u2019s northernmost protestant one. Both are of modest size.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mosque:<\/strong> Alnor mosk\u00e9 <strong>Troms\u00f8 <\/strong>69\u00b065&#8217;41&#8221;N serves an international muslim congreation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Catholic church:<\/strong> St. Mikael\u2019s church in <strong>Hammerfest  <\/strong>70\u00b039&#8217;48.10&#8243; a small, international congregation in the far north. It is most easily reached from the Finnish border hamlet of Kilpisj\u00e4rvi, but some exciting paths also lead from Norway. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Whisky destillery:<\/strong> Aurora Destillery at \u00c5r\u00f8ybukt &nbsp;69\u00b0&nbsp;38&#8242;&nbsp;24&#8243; N on the <strong>Lyngenfjord <\/strong>destills the world&#8217;s northernmost whisky.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hard Rock Caf\u00e9<\/strong>; This chain of iconic burger joints has its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hardrockcafe.com\/location\/tromso\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">northernmost caf\u00e9 <\/a>in <strong>Troms\u00f8&#8217;s <\/strong>main street \u00a069\u00b064&#8221;77&#8243;N<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>McDonald&#8217;s: <\/strong>The world&#8217;s northernmost golden arches are found at  69\u00b064&#8217;98N, some 3-4 minutes furthern north. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Burger King:<\/strong> A drive-in outlet in <strong>Troms\u00f8 <\/strong>69\u00b0\u00a067&#8242;\u00a015 N the world\u2019s northernmost. But burger lovers shouldn&#8217;t hesitate to go further north, burgers are served even in Svalbard.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Subway:<\/strong> The northernmost of these sandwiches can be enjoyed in Alta\u2019s main shopping centre 69\u00b0 58&#8242; 7.93&#8243; N.
